I am fascinated with creating porcelain vessels that represent important people in my life. Much like the individuality of each person, my vessels depict the essence of each one of my subjects by creating forms with my friends and family in mind. While crafting each vase, I visualize each personality, character traits, and physical features to incorporate within. Rotating the porcelain within my hands, I build the person up over time. In the process of physically forming the clay, I am also forming a connection to the person. For instance, if someone is more private I strategically make the opening of the vessel as closed off and as slight as I can form it. A part of my process in shaping the work is selecting the opening of the work I believe it’s the most important fragment of the piece. Color is another important decision, I sought to mix my own glazes for my pieces and created the colors seen on my work. I hope to communicate within my work a sense of peace and familiarity, and to capture different relationships. Family and friends can be an immense part of our lives, and these pieces will last forever. I am inspired to enhance interior spaces with the placement of my work while simultaneously commemorating loved ones. My goal is to create an object that has the same sentimental value I have for that person inside while forming the work.
